AFG January 2020 Update

NEW CLASSROOM CONSTRUCTION PROJECT BEGINS

After more than two years of preparation and fundraising, Gatoto is replacing its decades old sheet metal classrooms with a two story masonry building.

Gatoto marked the end of the 2019 school year with a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new classrooms.

School head Betty Nyagoha, school and community leaders, and construction professionals were among those on hand to watch Orla Cawley, Chair of Gatoto’s governing board, begin the heavy work.

2020 SCHOOL YEAR COMMENCES WITH COMPLETION OF TEMPORARY CLASSROOMS FOR STUDENTS DISPLACED BY CONSTRUCTION

By the time the school year began, new temporary classrooms were in good working order. The new classrooms are located in another corner of the campus, well removed from the construction project.

HEAVY RAINS DELAY PROGRESS

Unfortunately, the seasonal rains of January were heavy, delaying construction for about two weeks, as the road through Mukuru kwa Reuben slum to Gatoto became impassable for construction-related trucks.

CONSTRUCTION RESUMES

More recently, the rains abated. The road to Gatoto became passable and construction resumed.
